Can’t get enough of the gorgeous pink and white cherry blossoms? Neither can we – and this weekend marks Richmond’s turn to celebrate the season.
Every year, the Richmond Cherry Blossom Festival brings the community together at Garry Point Park for an afternoon of traditional Japanese music, dance, crafts, and food.
The festival was established in 2017 to showcase the 255 Akebono cherry trees at Garry Point, which were donated to the City by the BC Wakayama Kenjin Kai, the Wakayama Prefectural Association.
According to the festival’s website, the association supports the legacy and heritage of the Japanese families that immigrated to Steveston from the Wakayama Prefecture in Japan.
Taking place from 11 am to 4 pm on Sunday, April 7th, the festival will feature demos from local artisans in the Hanami Tent, including calligraphy, bonsai and origami, as well as the opportunity to experience a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony.

In the Sakura Tent, visitors can experience an ikebana demonstration, and enjoy performances by taiko drummers, folk singers and dancers.
Finally, children of all ages are invited to the Chibi-Chan Tent to learn how to fold origami using special paper and techniques.
Note that admission to the festival is completely free.
So there you have it, cherry blossom lovers! Consider this your second chance if you couldn’t make it out to David Lam Park last weekend.
