This Metro Vancouver park is home to an ‘exotic’ forest with the tallest tree species in the world

It turns out you don’t have to take a trip to California to see some gorgeous redwoods. In fact, you don’t even have to leave Metro Vancouver! Surrey’s Redwood Park boasts a large forest of ‘exotic trees,’ according to the City of Surrey, and this includes a grove of ‘mature’ Sierra Redwoods – AKA the tallest tree species in the world!

With over 5 km of scenic nature trails to explore, Redwood Park is a fantastic spot for outdoor lovers of all ages and abilities to immerse themselves in nature.

There’s also a wheelchair-accessible playground as well as several ‘rustic’ year-round picnic shelters for public use.

Park history

Redwood Park is part of the legacy of twin brothers Peter and David Brown, who were born to one of Surrey’s earliest ‘pioneering families,’ according to the City.

In 1893, their father gifted them a large plot of farmland that the brothers instead decided to turn into their own “forest sanctuary,” filled with their favourite trees from across the globe.

The pair built a treehouse where they decided to live in solitude for the remainder of their lives, which now exists as a replica in the centre of the park.

In addition to a replica of the treehouse, visitors can view public art by local artist Derek Rowe entitled “Redwood Forest Mysteries,” a drinking fountain shaped like a large tree stump.

So there you have it, Metro Van! The next time you want to hug a giant tree, consider stopping at Surrey’s own Redwood Park.
