There’s a bright red canyon in Alberta with billion-year-old rocks and crystal-clear water

Waterton Lakes National Park is full of surprises, but few Alberta spots are quite as vibrant as Red Rock Canyon.

Located three and a half hours south of Calgary, this incredible area is surrounded by towering trees and majestic wildlife. From waterfalls to wildflowers, Waterton has a little something for families, adventure seekers, and romantics — but the Mars-coloured canyon is universally beloved.

What makes Red Rock Canyon so special?

Just as the name would imply, this deep canyon is known for its bright red rock, which, in contrast to the blue sky above, is striking.

Best of all, you’ll hardly break a sweat when checking it out!

Described as “easy” by the National Park’s site, the 30-minute loop will take you past interpretive displays and across a foot bridge, then around the lower part of the canyon.

Here, you’ll see layers upon layers of argillite, some of which is over a billion years old, in addition to the crystal-clear glacier water that runs through the gorge.

Not only will you learn a thing or two, but the brightly coloured pools will make for a unique photo op.

When should you visit?

Hoping to check out Waterton? There are a few things you’ll need to know before you go.

While the park is open all year, many businesses, including gas stations and restaurants, are closed in the winter.

If you’re hoping to grab a bite at the townsite, have a picnic, and see grass, it’s recommended that you go between May and October, when most things open at the park.

During the summer, Red Rock Canyon in particular can get pretty busy, so please stay on the designated trail to help protect the environment and don’t forget to wear comfortable footwear.

While the canyon loop is only 0.7 km, it’s important to be prepared for anything, but it’ll be worth it.
