Here’s how Edmonton will observe the memory of Queen Elizabeth II on Monday

As announced by Premiere Justin Trudeau, a new holiday in honour of Queen Elizabeth II will be observed all over Canada and in Edmonton this upcoming Monday.

This, of course, is not a stat holiday for Albertans, but rather an opportunity to mourn the loss of Britain’s longest-reigning monarch.

There are, however, a few things to take note of before September 19th.

While the mass majority will not get the day off to watch the Queen’s service, some federal workers have been granted a day of mourning – and it could affect your day-to-day activities.

POST OFFICES

As confirmed in a statement issued by the Canadian mail courier, there will be no mail collection or deliveries on Monday. 

Likewise, most post offices will be closed – unless in a franchised location.

BANKS

While the Canadian Bankers Association will observe a moment of silence, banks across Canada will remain open. 

CITY SERVICES AND LEISURE CENTRES

From public pools and administrative buildings to recreational facilities and transit – all city services will be open and running on September 19th

In addition grocery and liquor stores, movie theatres and most attractions will also be open – though we’d recommend checking their hours before you leave the house, just in case!

Now – for those of you who do have some time on Monday that would like to pay your respects, the following events will be happening in Edmonton as a way to mark the Queen’s federal holiday:

ALBERTA COMMEMORATIVE SERVICE

Held at the Alberta Legislature, Edmontontionans are encouraged to attend Alberta’s official service. Alternatively, this event will be live-streamed on the government website at the page linked above.
