This Ontario park has ‘extremely rare’ coastal dunes & world-class sunsets

Summer adventures in Ontario don’t get better than this. If you’re craving gorgeous landscapes, scenic hikes, and world-class sunsets, look no further than Pinery Provincial Park.

Located on the shores of Lake Huron in Grand Bend, Pinery is described by Ontario Parks as a “breathtakingly beautiful park with 10 km of sand beach.”

This provincial park is home to some spectacular scenery.

Ontario Parks says that it contains “extremely rare and fragile” Oak Savanna and Coastal Dune Ecosystems.

“Pinery’s landmass was created over the past 6,000 years by sand dune formations, resulting in an impressive coastal sand dune complex spanning over 9.5 km of the Lake Huron shoreline,” writes Ontario Parks.

To give you an idea of how rare these dunes are, Ontario Parks says that they make up less than 0.5% of our province’s land.

These ecosystems have extraordinary biodiversity — we’re talking over 800 vascular plants, and over 300 bird species.

There are 21 square kilometres of rare forests and rolling dunes to explore.

You can enjoy the view from 10 walking trails, a 14 km bike trail, and 38 km of groomed ski trails in the wintertime.

However, what makes this park truly extraordinary is the sunsets.

Ontario Parks says that the sunsets here were once ranked among the “Top 10 Best in the World” by National Geographic.

You can take in the sunset views from the sandy shoreline or on the water.

The park has canoes, hydro bikes, paddleboats, single and double kayaks available to rent which you can use to explore the Old Ausable Channel.

All of this being said, it’s clear that Pinery Provincial Park is one of the best year-round outdoor destinations that Ontario has to offer.
