You can explore a 180-acre heritage farm in this Alberta town

Overlooking the Rocky Mountains in southwestern Alberta, Pincher Creek is a small town with a long history tied to ranching, agriculture, and the railway. You can still see plenty of history around the area today, including at an 180-acre heritage farm museum filled with historic buildings and antique agricultural equipment.

Beyond its history, Pincher Creek is surrounded by the Rocky Mountains, lakes, trails and waterfalls, giving you plenty to see once fall arrives.

What is Pincher Creek known for?

According to the Town of Pincher Creek, in 1874, a Northwest Mounted Police patrol found a pair of pincers, a common tool that was used for trimming horses’ hooves, in the creek. American prospectors left the tool there six years earlier while travelling toward the goldfields in British Columbia.

The discovery gave the creek its name, which was eventually used for the town as it developed in the area.

The Mounties also played a major role in Pincher Creek’s early history. In 1878, they established a breeding ranch here to supply the force with horses. Horse raising and equestrian training have continued in the area ever since, and the connection to horses still shows up in the community’s annual professional rodeo, which draws in competitors and spectators from nearby ranches and communities.

What can I do in Pincher Creek?

Explore Heritage Acres Farm Museum
- Set on 18 acres by the Oldman River Dam, Heritage Acres Farm Museum focuses on Alberta’s agricultural history from 1880 to 1960. You can wander the grounds and explore relocated heritage buildings, antique tractors and horse-drawn equipment. There’s a 110-foot-long dairy barn, a 1904 blacksmith shop and even a prairie grain elevator.

Visit the Lebel Mansion
- Built in 1910, the Lebel Mansion was originally home to the local businessman Timothee Lebel before becoming a hospital in 1924. Today, you can take a self-guided tour of the building, browse rotating exhibitions in the free public art gallery, and shop for locally made artwork and gifts.

Step back in time at Kootenai Brown Historical Park
- Kootenai Brown Historical Park is a six-acre heritage site where you can wander through a recreated pioneer village, explore historic buildings, and check out thousands of artifacts from the area’s past.

Take a trip to Lundbreck Falls
- About 26 kilometres from Pincher Creek, Lundbreck Falls is a pair of waterfalls that drop about 12 metres into a pool below. There are observation platforms where you can see the falls from above, along with an easy trail that leads you right to the base of the waterfall. You’ll also find interpretive signs along the trail that explore some of the area’s history and fossil record.

Take a self-guided walking tour through downtown
- Pincher Creek has a self-guided walking tour that takes you through some of the town’s history without going far. Along the route, you’ll pass historic buildings, gardens and several murals. You can also stop at St. John’s Anglican Church, the oldest Anglican church in continuous use in Alberta, and see the metal pincers sculpture that ties back to the town’s name.

Where is Pincher Creek located?

Pincher Creek is located in southwestern Alberta, about 210 kilometres south of Calgary and 100 kilometres west of Lethbridge.

The town is close to Waterton Lakes National Park, Castle Provincial Park and the Crowsnest Pass, so you can easily add a few nearby stops to your trip.
