This park is one of the most picture-perfect spots in B.C.

Spring is finally here and summer’s on the horizon — which means it’s time to start planning more outdoor adventures.

If you’re looking for something a little different to add to your list this year, we’ve got just the place.

Sooke Potholes Provincial Park, located on southern Vancouver Island and just a 45 minute drive from Victoria, is a must-visit park due to its unique natural phenomenon: polished rock potholes that were carved out of the landscape more than 15,000 years ago.

These smooth, deep potholes were caused by the movement of ancient glaciers over the years. Now, they make for a series of awesome swimming holes along the Sooke River, and some of the best freshwater swimming in BC. Taking a refreshing dip in these crystal-clear waters is the perfect way to cool off on a hot day.

Beyond the water, the park also features a day-use area, complete with picnic spots, parking, and washrooms. There are also several short scenic trails along the river you can embark on with incredible viewpoints.

Deep in the park, you’ll even find the abandoned ruins of an unfinished resort, which has since been adorned with art and graffiti. Insta-worthy indeed!

If you’re up for a challenge, you can try hiking the 12.9 km out-and-back trail from Sooke Potholes to Empress Mountain. This moderate route features many waterfalls and a lake, and rewards you at the end with a panoramic view of rolling hills and the ocean at a distance.

Sooke Potholes is also an excellent starting point for exploring the Galloping Goose Regional Trail by bike or on foot, a famous former railway line that runs from Sooke to Victoria.

So, whether you’re up for a swim, a hike, or just want a peaceful spot to soak in nature, this hidden gem has it all. Happy adventuring!
