This Ontario park is home to a rare bright blue & green meromictic lake

This destination is worth a top spot on your summer bucket list. Located two hours from Toronto is Petroglyphs Provincial Park, a nature preserve with fascinating rock carvings and a beautiful rare lake.

Petroglyphs is a protected and sacred site. It’s home to the largest concentration of Indigenous rock carvings in the country.

These carvings are called petroglyphs, which is what the park is named after.

These depictions feature turtles, snakes, birds, and even humans, making it a truly sacred site called “The Teaching Rocks.”

Immerse yourself in the traditions of the Ojibway (Nishnaabe) people as you explore the Learning Place Visitor Centre and discover the teachings of the medicine wheel, offering insights into their culture and connection to the land.

While you’re there, you will definitely want to visit the stunning McGinnis Lake.

This lake shimmers with bright blue and green hues. It’s one of the very few meromictic lakes in Canada, where different layers of water don’t intermix, creating a mesmerizing sight.

Unfortunately, swimming is not allowed in McGinnis Lake to preserve its meromictic nature and scientifically significant sediment record.

Prepare for incredible wildlife encounters as Petroglyphs Provincial Park offers great opportunities for wildlife viewing, allowing you to observe and appreciate the diverse animal species that call this park their home.

Petroglyphs Provincial Park allows you to explore ancient carvings, learn about Indigenous traditions, marvel at unique waters, and embrace the wonders of wildlife—all in one remarkable destination.
