If you’re looking for scenic views, Peter Lougheed Provincial Park in Alberta should undoubtedly be on your Canadian hit list.
Located southwest of Calgary, this lesser-known area has 123,900 acres of towering trees, wildlife, and is one of the “13 Most Beautiful Places on Earth You’ve Never Heard Of,” according to Outside.
From spectacular deserts and tropical landscapes, the 2024 list included Cedar Breaks National Monument in Utah, Lefkada Island in Greece, and of course, Peter Lougheed.
Described as preserving “a landscape of glacier-capped peaks surrounding the Upper and Lower Kananaskis lakes,” the park was revered for its postcard-like appearance and its golden larch trees in the fall.
Whether you’re into hiking, biking or picnicking, this particular area is a stand out—no matter who you are!
In fact, in addition to its beauty, Peter Lougheed is also considered one of Canada’s most accessible parks with multiple barrier-free trails wide enough to accommodate a wheelchair.

Those who want to really stretch out their trip can check in to the newly renovated William Watson Lodge, which overlooks Lower Kananaskis Lake and features accessible cottages, plus 13 campsites and prioritizes people with disabilities and seniors.
If however, you’re just going for a drive, we’d recommend Highwood Pass— a 54-kilometre route that goes through the park and offers an incredible view of the mountains, trees, and surrounding lakes.
It’s also one of the most scenic roads in the country.
