There’s a tall sand terrace & beautiful natural springs in this Ontario park

Summer is made for outdoor adventures and we have just the thing, or should we say, the park. Petawawa Terrace Provincial Park offers stunning green foliage over Ontario’s natural landscape. Make your way to the Ottawa region and explore Petawawa Terrace Provincial Park, home to a tall sand terrace and beautiful natural springs.

About an hour and a half away from Ottawa is Petawawa, Ontario, situated between the Petawawa River and the Ottawa River. This town offers all-season joys from sandy beaches to snowshoeing adventures in the winter. But as for its provincial park, it is not one to skip over.

According to the official Petawawa site, the park is located right in the centre of the town, taking over 215 hectares of green space.

“Please note that there are no Ontario Parks visitor services, facilities or activities at this park,” states the town. “Also, the map signage is outdated. There are a few extra side trails not shown and other trails are overgrown or inaccessible at various times of the year.”

Per Ontario Parks, you can still find marine clay left over from the ancient Champlain Sea at Petawawa Terrace. You’ll also find sandy soils here which are a rare landscape in Ontario. And of course, the coldwater springs.

“The terraces show us the history of post-glacial erosion, giving a hint of what has gone before, while also providing diverse habitat for wildlife,” shares Ontario Parks.

Take note that if you plan on going out to explore the park, make sure you are wearing the proper footwear to ensure your safety.

And after a long day of exploring, fuel up at one of the many local restaurants in Petawawa. The County of Renfrew offers an interactive map featuring food services in the county, including in Petawawa.

Now what are you waiting for? Plan your trip!
