This hike in Ontario takes you to overhanging cliffs & a secret ‘rabbit hole’

Calling all explorers! This summer, you can climb your way across 400-million-year-old caves and cliff systems at the incredible Overhanging Point in the Bruce Peninsula.

Back in pre-historic times, this land was submerged in a tropical sea, according to Explore The Bruce.

If you look closely, “you’ll see layers of embossed, fossilized coral shielding dolomite and limestone,” which have been eroded over time into hidden caves and overhanging cliffs.

Overhanging Point is actually a massive bowl-shaped rock that has been hollowed out of a cliff.

You will find this spot along the popular Cyprus Lake Trailhead.

“Once you arrive at Overhanging Point you’ll see why people rave about the breathtaking view,” says Explore The Bruce.

If you haven’t been, you’ll be taken aback by the incredible views of turquoise waters and intricate cliffs — the scenery is so unique that you’ll forget you’re in Ontario!

At Overhanging Point, there’s an “easy-to-miss hidden rabbit hole” that will take you to the amphitheatre below.

Also along this route is the beautiful Indian Head Cove and The Grotto, which is one of the world’s only natural underground swimming pools.

This destination is one of the few places in the world where you can float in a subterranean body of water.

Surrounded by aqua-blue waters and rugged dolomite cliffs, The Grotto is a natural underground swimming pool in Ontario not unlike the cenotes of Mexico or the caves of Greece.

It’s worth noting that due to the popularity of this area, reservations are required in advance to visit this area between April 30th and October 31st.

You can find all the details and book your visit on Parks Canada’s website.

Happy exploring, friends!
