This Ontario skating rink dates back to 1872 & it opens for the season this month

It is officially cold out, and we’re almost a month into winter season in Ontario, which means it is time for everyone’s favourite activity this time of year: outdoor skating. And if you’re looking for a historical spot, look no further than the Rideau Hall skating rink.

As early as this weekend, you can check out this skating rink in Ottawa.

According to the Governor General of Canada, the Winter Pavilion, a restored heritage building, is available for visitors to warm up and lace up their skates this season.

“Glide into history on the Rideau Hall skating rink! Dating back to 1872, the skating rink has hosted generations of skaters and shaped the culture of winter sports in Canada,” states the Governor General’s website.

In fact, women’s hockey traces its roots back here, as the first known image of women playing the sport was taken here in the early 1890s!

So head down and get ready to be part of history!

The rink is open on January 13 until March 3rd, 2024.

Of note, there is no on-site parking, but free street parking is available on the surrounding streets.
