One of the brightest meteor showers of the year starts tomorrow

December may be the most magical time of year because of the holiday season but there’s something equally magical happening this month that you don’t want to miss. We’re talking about the Geminid Meteor Shower that will be peaking over our state later this month. Let’s get into how you can catch a glimpse.

The Geminids Meteor Shower will happen December 4th to 17th and will peak overnight Monday and Tuesday, December 13th & 14th according to EarthSky. If you’re looking for the best bang for your buck in terms of catching the most meteors you should look skyward around 2 am on the morning of the 14th. This is when the shower’s radiant point is at its highest point in the sky.

But if you can’t stay up that late on the 13th & 14th don’t worry because you’ll still be able to catch showers throughout the month. That being said, at its peak, the meteors are often bold, white, and bright with opportunities to catch 50+ meteors per hour on a dark night. So why not lose some Z’s to watch the last meteor shower of 2021, it’ll probably be worth it.

As always, your best bet to catch meteors is to find the darkest spot possible and look towards the horizon. Dark and living in a city don’t exactly go together but we do have a few stargazing spots in Seattle if you’re struggling to come up with a location. Happy stargazing folks!
