Chasing that ‘Hallmark’ Christmas feeling? It won’t be long until the lakes, rivers, and ponds freeze over for the winter months, but Olympic Plaza in Calgary, Alberta will not be among them. Don’t fret, though!
“Unfortunately, Olympic Plaza will look a bit different this winter with no skating or Christmas tree due to the upcoming closure of the plaza at the beginning of January 2025 as part of the Arts Commons Transformation (ACT) project,” the city shared.
“Instead, skaters can enjoy other downtown skating options.”
Luckily, for those who were looking forward to hitting the plaza, the area will still be buzzing this holiday season.
While the public will not be able to do laps around the Christmas tree, adventure-seekers will be encouraged to check out their ‘Plaza Palooza,’ an eight-day celebration with something for everyone.
From photo ops to entertainment, Olympic Plaza is going to be the place to be.
According to the city’s website, not only will there be live entertainment on stage every night, but a DJ and a dance floor as well.
Support local artists and a “Battle of the Buskers” on Saturday nights, as well as live ice sculpture carving demonstrations.
In addition, there will also be stilt walkers, living statues, fire breathers, and a Calgary ’88 Winter Olympics video—courtesy of Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame.
Carnival games, like Box Hockey, Cornhole, and Mini Golf will also be set up for your entertainment, and on-site firepits will be lit to keep your hands and toes toasty warm.
The best part? It’ll be FREE to attend!
Just head to the plaza between 4 pm and 9 pm on November 29th to December 1st, 2024, December 6th to the 8th, 13th to the 15th, and 20th to the 22nd.
As for the “other downtown skating options” mentioned?
The official Olympic Plaza Christmas tree will be moved to Barb Scott Park, where you can hit the rink, plus there will be a new pop-up rink at 311 8 Street SW, and a beautiful lagoon at Prince’s Island, just to name a few.
For a full list of outdoor skating rinks, head to their website and enjoy.
This year might feel unlike any others, but it’s still sure to be special.
Enjoy and happy partying!
You’re going to have a blast.
