This small town market in BC has goats on the roof

Looking for a unique stop on your next road trip to Vancouver Island? The Old Country Market in Coombs has been a landmark in BC for decades, known for its famous goats on the roof.

Created in the early ’70s by Norwegian immigrants Kristian and Solveig Graaten, the market was built directly into the hillside with a sod roof, later inviting the addition of a gaggle of adorable rooftop goats.

Now owned and operated by Larry and Lene Geekie, the market has since become one of the top tourist destinations in the whole province. So if you want to meet the famous goats that have made the rooftop their home – they’ll be back from May to October starting over the May long weekend!

What’s more, the goats are up on the roof tending the grass around the clock, so you don’t have to worry about missing them.

Looking to make a trip of it? July in Coombs is a great time to visit, as the town puts on ‘Old West’ activities at the Coombs Rodeo Ground every year, including a bluegrass festival, fiddlers jamboree, the annual Coombs Rodeo, and the Coombs Country Arts & Crafts Fair.

There are also ample camping opportunities at the Cameron Lake Recreation Site if you want to enjoy a day on the lake!

Plus, the Coombs General Store (around since 1910!) and Frontier Town make for an exciting visit year-round.

So there you have it, road trippers!
