Due to “high” aurora activity, the dazzling Northern Lights may be visible in Vancouver on Thursday, November 28th. So let’s keep our fingers crossed that the skies remain clear enough to watch them dance!
According to the University of Alaska Fairbanks, “high(+) aurora activity” is forecasted for Thursday, November 28th.
“If skies are clear, highly active auroral displays may be visible overhead from locations such as Inuvik, Yellowknife, Rankin and Iqaluit, Canada, to Vancouver, Helena, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Bay City, Toronto and Montpelier, U.S.A., and Charlottetown, Canada; and may be visible low on the horizon from Salem, Boise, Cheyenne, Lincoln, Indianapolis and Annapolis, U.S.A.,” shares the site.
The Kp index will be at its highest of 6 from 7 pm to 10 pm tonight, and will remain at a moderate level (Kp: 4) until 4 am.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the greatest expected three-hour Kp between November 28th and November 30th is a 5.67 (NOAA Scale G2), which is considered a moderate geomagnetic storm.
The moderate storm is forecasted to continue into Friday, November 29th, with a slightly lower Kp level than Thursday.
It’s clear skies this morning with fog patches dissipating until tonight, according to Environment Canada, when it will become “cloudy” with a 40% chance of showers before morning.
No matter, there’s still a good chance that the glowing Northern Lights may be visible against the clouds. So keep your eyes peeled!
All that’s left to do is head to a low-light area or your nearest stargazing spot this evening.
Some great options around the city include Stanley Park, Locarno Beach, Spanish Banks, and Burnaby Mountain Park.
