The northern lights could be visible across Alberta tonight

Whether you’re a photographer, a night owl, or a junior astronomer, look up! This week, cities and towns from coast to coast could catch a beautiful northern lights display and Alberta is no exception.

A G2 storm warning has been issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for the early morning hours of Nov. 29, 2025, meaning Calgary, Edmonton, and their surrounding areas could be in for a colourful display if they stay up late tonight.

When to see the northern lights

According to the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Albertans are among the many who should cross their fingers for little to no cloud coverage.

High aurora activity forecasted,” they explained.

“If skies are clear, highly active auroral displays may be visible overhead from locations such as Inuvik, Yellowknife, Rankin and Iqaluit, Canada, to Juneau, Alaska, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Thunder Bay and Sept-Iles, Canada; and may be visible low on the horizon from Seattle, Des Moines, Chicago, Cleveland and Boston, U.S.A., and Halifax, Canada.”

As for when you might see them?

Keep your eyes peeled between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. MST—but dress warm!

It’s certainly going to be a chilly evening with Calgary dipping to -16°C, and Edmonton dropping to -19°C overnight, as per Environment and Climate Change Canada’s website.

Where to see them

Interested? As always, light pollution could be an issue for those in a big city, so we’d recommend heading away from the hustle and bustle if you’d like to view them in all their glory.

The aurora forecast is looking good, and while snow is expected across Alberta there could still be an opportunity to witness the magic.

If you’re willing to head out, there are a ton of amazing dark sky preserves that’ll give you the best chance at seeing them.

Bring snacks, have fun, and don’t fret if you miss them.

There should be plenty of opportunities to see them in 2025!

Happy viewing!
