This BC park offers volcanic tours of a lava bed through 3 km of forest

Ready for adventure, Vancouver? Nisg̱a’a Memorial Lava Bed Park might be a good road trip away, but it’s definitely worth the visit. The first park in BC to be managed by a First Nation, the area has plenty of stunning natural features to experience as well as ways to learn about Nisg̱a’a people and culture.

The park is situated in the Nass Valley, approximately 90 km northwest of Terrace. The culturally significant park is home to a diverse range of volcanic landscapes, including lava flows, cinder cones, lava tubes, and other volcanic formations. These geological features were formed by volcanic activity that took place roughly 250 years ago – and you can check them out via guided tours!

Nass Valley Tours are priced at $40 per person, and take visitors through 3 km of old-growth forest to a scenic viewpoint overlooking a crater. What’s more, the basalt flow happens to be one of the most accessible volcanic features in the province – so it’s definitely worth adding to your summer bucket list!

Note that this hike is rated moderate by BC Parks, with some hills and steep stairs a part of the journey.

The park is managed by the Nisg̱a’a Lisims Government and contains a 16-site vehicle campground available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Note that there is a water pump and pit toilets available for campers to use, but visitors are encouraged to use camp stoves over the designated fire rings – though fires are permitted.
