When January 1 rolled around, many of us vowed to make 2025 the year we crush our fitness goals. But here’s a fun (or not-so-fun) fact: research shows that 80% of New Year’s Resolutions are abandoned within the month of January.
We all know exercise is good for us. But let’s be honest: motivation doesn’t always get the memo! Maybe it’s the allure of the sofa after a long day at work, the temptation of hitting snooze and staying cozy in bed in the morning, or hey — maybe you’re just a busy bee.
If this struggle sounds all too familiar, but you really do want to stick to your 2025 fitness goals as the year progresses, this Vancouver gym might be for you.
With 17 locations across BC, Fitness World is all about creating an approachable, supportive space for everyone. From personalized workouts to dynamic group classes, one-on-one sessions, and even recovery equipment, they’ve got everything you need to crush your goals.
We spoke with the Director of Fitness Classes at Fitness World Canada, Ingrid Knight-Cohee, about some of the challenges of maintaining a long-term routine and how to overcome them so you can have the 2025 glow-up you deserve. Yes, you!
According to Knight-Cohee, one of the biggest hurdles people face is something many of us will be familiar with: gymtimidation!
“For those beginning a new fitness journey, public gyms, and group exercise classes can be intimidating environments to enter,” she explains. “Lack of confidence can hinder many from stepping into a gym at all.”
Thankfully, Fitness World prides itself on being a welcoming, inclusive space with fitness classes for people of all levels — so you can leave those worries at the door.
Another common issue when getting started is setting unrealistic fitness goals. Sometimes, people start out with a “quick-fix” mindset, trying to lose weight or achieve a certain physical appearance rapidly. And more often than not, these goals are not sustainable.
“Ask yourself what’s achievable in your current lifestyle and fitness background,” Knight-Cohee says. “Thinking about long-term goals that are specialized towards your interests will support the longevity of your fitness journey.”
Instead of focusing solely on physical appearance, consider goals that improve your overall well-being. The results will come in time! And don’t be afraid to tweak those goals as you go.
“Fitness isn’t linear and a regular routine will never stay the same. Remember to meet yourself where you are.”
Starting a fitness journey alone can be overwhelming — without others to support you, it can be easy to lose enthusiasm. “By working out with peers and sharing your fitness goals with others, you’re not only more motivated but held accountable to your commitments,” Knight-Cohee says.
Fitness World offers 500 classes weekly — we’re talking everything from Zumba, yoga, and BollyX, to kickboxing, pilates, and more.
Trying out different classes is a great way to find something you love while making new friends and building a sense of community that helps you stay committed for the long haul!
One of the most common excuses people make for skipping workouts? Not enough time! But Knight-Cohee has a practical solution for this: schedule it like any other priority.
At the start of each week or month, book some classes or workout sessions, pop them in your calendar, and treat them as non-negotiable — similar to how you would treat family commitments or doctor appointments. And, if you really can’t make it to the gym, prioritize movement in a way that fits your schedule. This can be something as simple as a 20-minute walk, taking the stairs, or doing some yoga moves while binging your favourite show.
“Starting a fitness journey can feel overwhelming, but it’s important to remember that progress is progress, no matter how small.”
Here’s the best part — you can experience everything Fitness World has to offer for free. Simply sign up for a complimentary three-day gym pass, pop by any location, and try out group classes, solo workouts, or a personal training session.
Every trainer at Fitness World is committed to understanding an individual’s journey and can a develop unique fitness plan that helps you create sustainable growth and progress long-term. So. having a chat with them can be a great way to kick-start your journey.
Overall, Knight-Cohee says, the most important thing about fitness is to have fun with it!
“Fitness should add to your life, not feel like another obligation. There will always be obstacles in living an active lifestyle; the trick is in maintaining a mindset of movement being essential to being your best. Whether it is a little or a lot, making time for fitness means you’re nourishing your body, mind, and spirit, benefitting not only yourself, but everyone around you.”
