New trailer for star-studded ‘Nightmare Alley’ shows Toronto transformed into the 1940s

A star-studded remake of a Hollywood classic is coming to the big screen this December and those of us in Toronto are in for an extra special treat. The final trailer for Nightmare Alley, starring Bradley Cooper and directed by Guillermo del Toro, has officially dropped and it showcases the city as we’ve never seen it before.

The film follows a deceptive carny and con artist named Stanton “Stan” Carlisle, played by Cooper, who joins forces with a psychiatrist named Dr. Lilith Ritter, played by Cate Blanchett, who is “even more dangerous than he is.”  Other lead cast members include Willem Dafoe, Rooney Mara, and Toni Collette.

Described as a neo-noir psychological thriller, Nightmare Alley is actually the second film adaptation of the original novel, written by William Lindsay Gresham in 1946.

Del Toro chose Toronto for the film’s backdrop, as well as Buffalo for its historic buildings, which he called “absolutely amazing from an architectural point of view,” according to Buffalo News.

“I wanted to find a city that was really interesting to visit for an audience, that was not a city they were overtly familiar with,” he added. Filming began in Toronto way back in January 2020, but the pandemic and Bradley Cooper’s busy schedule caused months of delays.

Photos shared on social media during the early days of filming show Toronto transformed into a slice of the 1940, vintage cars and all.

Nightmare Alley hits theatres on December 17th and the trailer alone has us on the edge of our seats.
