New solo exhibition opening this weekend features a world-renowned Vancouver artist

While his name might not be as recognizable as say, Emily Carr, there’s no doubt that Steven Shearer is someone that every art fan in the city should be aware of. So, the fact that he’s got an upcoming solo exhibition at the Polygon Gallery in North Van is something we need to share!

Born in New Westminster in 1968, Shearer was actually a student at the Emily Carr University of Art & Design, graduating in 1992. Since then, his paintings, photos and other works have been shown in galleries around the world, ranging from the Metropolitan Musem of Art in New York to London’s Tate Modern.

As for the exhibition at the Polygon Gallery, you can expect an in-depth look at his ever-evolving focus on photography and print. Stretching back some 25 years, the retrospective of Shearer’s work is also the artist’s first solo exhibition in Vancouver since 2007.

Pair that with a very cool exhibition of Vancouver’s punk subculture that’s also in the gallery, and this is an easy pick for someone looking for a little bit of culture this weekend.
