Netflix stars & founders of Ontario’s June Motel are on the hunt for their next location

Less than a month after their show premiered on Netflix, the creators of Ontario’s trendy June Motel say they’re starting the search for their third location. The six-episode series, called Motel Makeover, follows best friends and business partners April Brown and Sarah Sklash as they transform a shabby beachside inn into the June Motel Sauble Beach, a dreamy destination with retro flair. Now, Sklash and Brown are getting ready to do it all over again.

“We are going to start the hunt for the third property this fall,” Brown told Curiocity in a Zoom interview. With both of their existing motels operating seasonally in two of Ontario’s most popular summer hotspots, Brown says they’re keeping an open mind about where to set up shop this time around.

“It’ll be a combination of what motels are out there for sale that charm us, but also what are the vacation destinations that are up-and-coming that we still need to discover?” said Brown. “We would definitely be open to expanding beyond Ontario.”

Sklash added that with so much “untapped potential” here in Ontario, there are a few local areas that are piquing their interest. “We love the idea of cottage country, Niagara […] we’re really just keeping our eyes and hearts open to whatever the next opportunity might be.”

Expansion plans aside, the ladies say they still have big dreams for their Prince Edward County and Sauble Beach motels, some of which are about to become reality.

“We’re going to develop the backside of the shop into a patio with a couple of campfires. We say that the quintessential summer experience in Prince Edward County is drinking a glass of wine around the fire and connecting with other travellers, so we really want to bring that experience to Sauble Beach,” said Brown.

Both motels will be closing up for the winter, but Sklash and Brown say their goal is to make The June a year-round destination with activities like snowshoeing and cross-country skiing offered in the colder months. Both motels are sold out for the remainder of the season, but they say that bookings for 2022 will become available at the end of this month.

The moteliers clearly have a lot on the go right now, but given the fact that they transformed their Sauble Beach motel on a tight timeline and an even tighter budget, it seems that no challenge is too great for these two.
