These Netflix shows were shot right here in Alberta

Alberta has a rich film tradition, and it’s no stranger to Netflix shows. Many of them were filmed right here in the province, and now there’s a super easy way to figure out which ones.

If you’ve been craving some Alberta representation on your feed, Netflix in Your Neighbourhood lists all the Canadian filming locations for Netflix originals. It even provides info on the towns and cities where shoots occurred.

From My Life With the Walter Boys to wildlife documentaries, some of your favourite shows were filmed here in our province. These are just a few!

Our Living World

The Emmy-award-winning team behind Our Great National Parks presents a revealing look at the network of connections that sustains life itself. Narrated by Cate Blanchett, the docuseries spans the globe to showcase extraordinary creatures and ecosystems. Episode three of Our Living World includes footage of wolverines living at the heart of the Alberta Rockies. While on the expedition, the film crew stayed at a rustic lodge close to the Kakwa Wildland Provincial Park and captured footage of the incredible creatures in their native habitat.

Where it was filmed: District of Greenview, Kakwa Wildland Provincial Park

My Life With the Walter Boys

Following the loss of her family in a tragic accident, 15-year-old Jackie Howard learns to adapt to a new life in rural Colorado with her guardian — and eight very rowdy boys. The show was filmed at locations in and around Calgary, including Bragg Creek, High River and Kananaskis. Alberta’s picturesque landscapes and stunning mountain peaks make Kananaskis Country a convincing dupe for Silver Springs, Colorado. A local Calgary indie band is also featured on episode four of season three, giving this show some pretty serious Alberta cred.

Where it was filmed: Bragg Creek, Calgary, Cochrane, High River, Kananaskis Country

Black Summer

This zombie apocalypse series follows a mother who embarks on a harrowing journey to find her daughter in the early days of an outbreak. She ends up banding together with a group of strangers to survive and get back to their loved ones. Set in the Z Nation universe, the series was created and co-executive produced by Karl Schaefer and John Hyams and produced by The Asylum.

Production on Black Summer took place in Calgary as well as the surrounding towns of Cochrane, Irricana, Morley and Beiseker. The town of High River was also transformed into an eerie apocalyptic wasteland for Black Summer Season 2, with The Museum of the Highwood serving as a zombie hideaway spot for Julius and Sun in Episode 2.

Where it was filmed: Calgary, High River.

There’s lots to explore on this handy site, and plenty more Netflix shows filmed in Canada. So feed your curiosity and see where else our stunning Alberta vistas have been featured!
