Here’s what to know about the latest Netflix price hike in Canada

Well folks, after over a year of stable prices, the number has gone up again! This month, subscribers old and new might notice a new Netflix price hike across Canada, but it depends on what subscription they have. Here’s what to know about it.

The new prices kicked off on Friday, January 14th. They are in effect immediately, so they will be reflected depending on the renewal date of current subscriptions (and will be notified 30 days before the price changes). Netflix will continue to have three tiers of subscriptions– Basic, Standard, and Premium.

The Basic plan (1 stream at a time, no HD or Ultra HD) actually remained unchanged at $9.99 CAD a month. Then, the Standard plan (2 streams at a time, no Ultra HD) went up by $1.50, from $14.99 to $16.49. And as you’ve probably guessed, the Premium plan (4 streams at a time, both HD and Ultra HD) went up the most, with a $2 hike from $18.99 to $20.99.

The new Netflix price hike for Canada (and the US), reflects the company’s continual investment in creating shows and movies both in North America and globally.

“We understand people have more entertainment choices than ever and we’re committed to delivering an even better experience for our members,” said Netflix Canada in a statement.

“We’re updating our prices so that we can continue to offer a wide variety of quality entertainment options. As always we offer a range of plans so members can pick a price that works for their budget.”

Honestly, we’re just pumped that the basic price has stayed the same. But, maybe it’s time to see if our roommate is willing to go halfsies on a new subscription for that glorious HD quality.
