One of Canada’s most legendary private art collections is touring 5 cities

One of Canada’s most legendary private art collections will soon be on tour. The McMichael Canadian Art Collection has just announce its upcoming new special exhibition Generations: The Sobey Family and Canadian Art, opening on February 12, 2022. And will soon be on the road.

According to the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, which is an agency of the Government of Ontario, the Generations offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore one of Canada’s most legendary private collections, revealing the family’s long-standing engagement with Canadian and Indigenous art.

This exhibit will bring together more than 170 works by early European newcomers, the Group of Seven, their contemporaries, Quebec Impressionists and the Automastiste painters along with the trailblazing Indigenous artists of today. Organizers say that Generations “examines the story of Canadian art from fresh perspectives and allows for new conversations between the art of yesterday and today.”

Following its opening at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, Generations will take residence in St. Johns, Newfoundland; Edmonton, Alberta; Charlottetown, PEI; and Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The Gallery says it will also produce a “robust slate of virtual programs including tours, educational classes and curatorial talks to give visitors and students an opportunity to engage with this treasured collection. As Canadians look to the arts for inspiration and insight, the McMichael continues to serve as a creative oasis in turbulent times.”

• Confederation Centre, Charlottetown, PEI (June 10, 2023 – September 4, 2023)
• Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Halifax, Nova Scotia (Fall 2023)
