There’s a historic swinging bridge in BC that spans the Eagle River

It turns out that the suspension bridges at Capilano and Lynn Canyon are far from the only ones to explore in BC! There’s a historic swinging bridge in the small community of Malakwa that’s worth putting on your road trip map this spring or summer!

The community of Malakwa is nestled in Eagle Valley, and is a ‘summer paradise’ with convenient access to Shuswap Lake, Blue Lake, Eagle’s Pass, and many more stunning warm-weather destinations in the Shuswap area.

And if you’re looking to check out a historic landmark that is as scenic as it is iconic, the swinging footbridge located at Malakwa Park is one you’ll definitely want to check out.

According to the Shuswap Trail Alliance, the park includes two pocket trail loops: One for walking and one for kids’ mountain bike skill development.

Visitors can cross the swinging suspension bridge and create a 4 km loop walk of the country roads by continuing north on Warner Road for around 1 km past Eagle River and Malakwa Beach Road.

So if you’re looking for a nature path that’s short and sweet, this is a great option, as the loop is ranked ‘easy’ by the Alliance.

History of the bridge

Spanning Eagle River, the foot bridge was originally constructed in 1915 as a way for local farmers to connect their farms to the community and school on the other side.

It has since been rebuilt by the Department of Highways in 1940, according to the Alliance.

To access the suspension bridge, visitors can travel 17 km east of the town of Sicamous on Highway 1, turning left onto Malakwa Road and following it until it meets the railroad tracks.

Visitors can then turn right on Community Hall Road and look for the Malakwa Park sign.

So there you have it, BC! Consider this suspension bridge a must-visit if you’re in the Shuswap area!
