This scenic trail goes through an abandoned Alberta town

The temperature has started to drop and leaves are changing colour. Whether you’re in the spirit or not, it’s the perfect time to go hiking! Not sure where to go? Consider the Lille Ghost Town Trail in Crowsnest Pass, Alberta.

Located two and a half from Calgary, this particular route is one of our favourites—especially come spooky month!

What you’ll see along the way

In addition to towering trees, those who kick up some dust should keep their eyes open for wildflowers, wildlife and what remains of Lille, a once bustling town that had a hospital, four-room school, and a hotel, but faded into history after the world coke market suffered a drastic decline.

These old coke ovens (which were used to convert coal into fuel) have been designated a historic site and can still be seen and seen by respectful explorers.

As for the town?

Unfortunately, all that’s left are building foundations and a few rusty fire hydrants—but it’s still pretty cool!

If you’d like to visit, you’ll have to start your journey at the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre.

Drive straight on the gravel road after the metal cattleguard, then continue for 250 metres and take the rough road cutting NW at the ‘Attention Anglers’ sign.

Follow this road about 100 metres to a large meadow and park your car, this is where you’ll find the trailhead and one heck of a photo op!

Pack light and don’t forget the essentials!

From comfortable shoes and snacks, you’ll want to come prepared.

It’s going to be a wicked stroll.
