This Alberta lake has an underwater secret & here’s what you need to know before visiting in the winter

Lake Minnewanka, Alberta or Minn-waki (Lake of Spirits), is an enchanting destination with blue water and stunning mountain views, but there’s so much more than meets the eye.

From paddling to a booze cruise, the reservoir is a must-visit for adventure seekers in the summertime but also offers a ton of excitement in the winter.

In addition to skating, those who are confident in their skills have also been known to go ice and scuba diving – an experience that is enhanced by the ghost town that lies beneath the surface.

According to Parks Canada, this used to be the site of the Beach House, a vacation spot that quickly grew to an entire townsite known as Minnewanka Landing.

In 1912, however, everything changed when a nearby dam partially submerged the area. This was the beginning of the end as later, another dam was built completely flooding the area in 1941.

Now, people come from all over the country to explore what used to be – even when it’s cold.

We wouldn’t recommend doing anything more than taking a lap on a pair of skates, but professionals have taken the plunge.

Have the know-how, a qualified team and the proper equipment? There are a few things of note before you even consider the activity.

One of which, is that diving is only allowed at Lake Minnewanka Reservoir and Two Jack Lake Reservoir, plus Parks Canada does not monitor natural ice surfaces for safety or mark potential hazards.

Again, we wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re a seasoned diver.

In short, it’s a pretty cool place, Alberta – you really never know what you’ll see, so check it out… but consider staying warm and dry.
