Keep your eyes peeled for a brand new Canadian toonie in circulation

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the discovery of insulin, the Royal Canadian Mint has released millions of new toonies across the country. And, we’ll be the first to say that we really do always feel just a little blessed whenever we get a ‘rarer’ coin in our change than usual. It’s the little things, after all.

Attributed to 4 researchers who were in Canada, the 1921 discovery of insulin has saved millions of lives around the world. And, it nabbed two of the more prominent people behind it with a Nobel Prize for their efforts.

On the coin are various ‘tools of the trade’ used during for the discovery, as well as blood cells and the word ‘INSULIN/INSULINE’. Meanwhile, the real focus is a ribbon-looking “monomer”, which is one of the building blocks of the insulin molecule.

Some two million of the coloured toonies were released into circulaton today, with another million uncoloured coins also going out. You can buy collectible, non-circulation sets on the Royal Canadian Mint website, but we recommend just checking out your local bank for them first!

That’s our plan, at least.
