There’s a park in Ontario where rapids plunge into scenic waterfalls

This spring, trade cityscapes for cascading waterfalls at Kap-Kig-Iwan Provincial Park in Ontario. Rushing rapids plunge into scenic valleys, offering stunning, up-close views of the falls. Here’s what to know!

Hit the road this May as the park opens for the season on May 16, 2025. It’s about a six-hour drive north, so you have a few weeks to decide who will be the designated driver in your group. Nonetheless, you’re in for a real treat.

Next stop: Kap-Kig-Iwan Provincial Park

According to Ontario Parks, its name is said to come from the Ojibwe phrase “water running over the edge,” And that’s exactly it. Englehart River plunges down white-water rapids, over several cascades and waterfalls within the park. The sight is definitely worth seeing.

What if we told you that you could see them up close and personal?

Exploring the park

One of Kap-Kig-Iwan trails, Hell’s Gate trail, guides you along Englehart River, towards incredible waterfall views.

Here, you’ll find multiple waterfalls connected by rapids. The Upland Circle Trail, which is slightly longer than the first, is ideal for birdwatchers and even features scenic lookout points.

“Perfect for novice hikers, these trails showcase the park’s beauty and reward visitors with stunning lookouts, with little challenging terrain,” shares Ontario Parks.

They even mention that you can spot several bird species year-round, including Black-capped Chickadees, Red-breasted Nuthatches, and woodpeckers.

And nothing beats birdwatching and taking in the natural beauty from above the valley.

It looks like your next adventure awaits! Now, all you have to do is prepare for your outdoor experience and decide who’s coming with you.

Pick wisely, it’s a long drive!
