Take a hike: a portion of this ultra-popular Alberta trail has closed for the rest of the summer

Headed to the mountains? You might want to reconsider your end-of-summer adventure because a popular hiking trail and destination will be partially closed until later this year.

Johnston Canyon, known for its stunning waterfall views and easy-to-moderate difficulty, is undergoing some construction. Luckily, this particular closure will only affect the upper trail and will only continue into the fall.

“Starting today, the pedestrian railing located on the Johnston Canyon Trail from the Lower Falls to the Upper Falls will be replaced & extended,” Banff National Park wrote in a Twitter statement on Monday.

“Infrastructure improvements to the Johnston Canyon railings will enhance accessibility, improve visitor safety and reduce disturbance of the endangered Black Swifts nesting in Johnston Canyon,” they continued on their website.

If you’d still like to check out the area, the trail leading to the Ink Pots via the Johnston Creek trailhead will remain open – so feel free to lace up and head out.

Happy hiking! Unless you wanted to hit the upper falls.

Sorry, friends!
