There’s a scenic Alberta trail that winds through charming towns and a boreal forest

Need a change in scenery? Canada has some incredible places to lose yourself, but the Iron Horse Trail in Alberta is one for the adventurers.

An extraordinary journey full of surprises, this 176-kilometre gem winds through the northeastern part of the province and even follows an old Canadian National Railway line.

Why is the Iron Horse so special?

Whether you’re an adventure seeker or a photographer, the Iron Horse Trail is not to be missed.

A one-of-a-kind route, this scenic road threads itself in and out of some unbelievable destinations like the town of St. Paul, home of the globe’s first UFO landing pad, as well as Smokey Lake and the community of Fort Kent.

“The Iron Horse Trail is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts and history buffs,” explains Travel Lakeland.

“As it passes through small towns and communities, it offers ample opportunities to explore local culture and history.”

From forests full of lush pine trees to wide-open landscapes, the view along the way is incredibly diverse and largely untouched, having existed in its “relatively natural state” since the 1920s.

Choose your own adventure

Need to stretch your legs or get your adrenaline going? From sunny day activities to winter experiences, the Iron Horse has a little something for everyone, no matter the weather.

“Accessible year-round, the trail accommodates activities such as UTV, hiking, cycling, horseback riding, wagon rides, and snowmobiling,” continues Travel Lakeland.

“It also provides access to fishing, wildlife viewing, and birdwatching opportunities.”
