Hiking season may be winding down for most of us, but that’s nothing for those who don’t mind a little cold! If you have good boots (and maybe spikes just to be on the safe side) then you’ll be rewarded with stunning sights on this quintessentially Alberta hike in Banff National Park.
This popular trail is about 30 minutes from the town of Banff. It’s pretty well-circulated on account of its multiple waterfalls and stunning viewpoints.
Follow the trail into the depths of the canyon that takes you along forested paths and narrow bridges. The first stop is at the Lower Falls, and if you keep going, you’ll find yourself spellbound by the spectacular 30-metre-high Upper Falls.
Parks Canada suggests continuing 265 m further to the viewpoint at the top of the Upper Falls for a unique perspective.
For many hikers, this is where their journey comes to an end. But if you’re willing to push a little further – more surprises await!
The trail continues past the falls until finally arriving at an enchanting meadow. There you’ll find a handful of shallow pools where water bubbles from deep below the Earth’s surface. These are called the Ink Pots.
According to All Trails, “the Ink Pots are small mineral springs that can be slightly different colours depending on the time of year.”
Here is the full trail breakdown, as per Parks Canada:

Inspired to take a brisk hike? Make sure you dress warmly, wear appropriate footwear, and pack enough water and snacks – and maybe some bear spray to cover all your bases. We always recommend checking the Parks Canada website before you go for the most up-to-date information on safety and weather conditions.
Happy trails friends!
