Busy stretch of Highway 1 between BC and AB to close for over a month

Highway 1 between BC and Alberta is a seriously popular route. As the main road between Vancouver and Calgary, the highway is easily the most convenient option for a wide variety of road trips between the two cities and beyond. So, we thought it’s only fair to update you about a pretty major closure that’s on the horizon.

Starting tomorrow (Tuesday, April 29th) a 4.8km stretch of Highway 1 between Golden and Castle Junction (between Banff and Lake Louise) will close for just over a month. The closure is a part of a larger renovation process through Kicking Horse Canyon, which has already seen stretches of road have limited access or short down completely before.

But, there’s no doubt that this closure will be particularly impactful for those hoping for a spring road trip or getaway (especially for those travelling from Alberta to the Okanagan). In light of the closure, Highways 93S and 95 will be available as detour routes, but will add some 90 minutes to travel time between the two areas. Yeah, not exactly the most convenient alternative.

Assuming all goes to plan, the stretch of Highway 1 between BC and AB will reopen by May 20th. So, keep this in mind if you’re going on a little road trip in the next month- you might have to leave early!
