From its mountains, bustling cities, and quirky landmarks, few provinces do it bigger and better than Wild Rose Country! Eager to cross its most incredible destinations off your prairie bucket list? Head to Lethbridge, Alberta—home to the High Level Bridge.
The longest and highest trestle on the planet, this impressive viaduct is truly in a league of its own.
According to the Visit Lethbridge website, the Canadian Pacific Railway spearheaded the project in order to provide rail access to the mines.
Construction reportedly began in August 1908, and $1,334,525 later, it officially opened.
On November 1, 1909, the 5,327-foot (1.6km), 314 feet high (96 meters) bridge was ready to go, and has since been “described by some as one of the wonders of the world.”
“With the growth of coal mining in the city, the population of Lethbridge continued to grow,” Visit Lethbridge says on their website.
“This CPR rail line has stood the test of time and is still used today with numerous trains crossing the bridge throughout the day.”
