The Mineral Capital of Canada can be found right here in Ontario – home to stunning green spaces, historical buildings and a scenic waterfall that flows into a calming bay. Here’s what to know about Bancroft, Ontario.

Just over a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Toronto is Bancroft, Ontario – a town rich in history, filled with picturesque buildings and abandoned homes in the countryside, according to its site.

It’s nested in the York River Valley on the southern edge of the Canadian Shield and is a tourist attraction thanks to its natural wonders and outdoor experiences. It’s popular for fishing, camping, snowmobiling and more.

A key highlight of Bancroft is its Municipal office, a building steeped in history. According to the town’s tourism site, it was originally constructed in 1899 and once served as the town’s train station, marking a crucial stop on the Central Ontario Railway.

Although the train station no longer operates, it has been carefully preserved and repurposed with the help of the community. Today, it serves as the Town of Bancroft’s Municipal office and houses the Mineral Museum, an addition that showcases the area’s rich geological heritage.

As for its natural scenic sights, Bancroft is home to walking trails – one of which leads to a stunning waterfall.

Just a short drive away from the town’s core is High Falls Dam. It offers a tranquil yet awe-inspiring experience.

The journey begins on Highway 62 North, where a turn onto ‘Y’ Road leads to the High Falls Trail. After crossing South Baptiste Lake Road, you’ll find the trail.

It reveals the breathtaking sight of water cascading over rugged rocks before calming into a serene bay, according to the town’s site.

There’s parking conveniently available on-site which makes High Falls Dam an accessible and must-see destination for nature lovers exploring Bancroft.
