Here’s when, where & how to vote in Calgary’s upcoming Municipal Election

Election season is here, Calgary and man, are we going to be busy in the coming weeks! You see, not only do we have a few decisions to make in the federal space, but we’ve also got to choose a candidate to succeed long standing mayor, Naheed Nenshi – who served the city for nearly 11 years.

Of course, because politics have such an effect on today’s social climate, it’s important to know ahead of time exactly how, when and where to vote so you can worry about the more important things like who you’re going to cast your vote for – and that’s why we’re here!

Here’s everything that you need to know about Calgary’s municipal election this year.

WHERE

This year, Calgarians can choose to either submit a mail-in ballot or show up in-person to a polling station.

Those with a disability or illness, are working, studying, or away on vacation are encouraged to request a mail-in ballot here, while everyone else can visit their local voting booth.

Each assigned station can be found both on the voter information card that was mailed to each household or via the ‘Where do I Vote’ lookup tool, which will be available here after September 21st.

Your nearest facility will either be a library, community centre, place of worship, school, or recreation centre within 800 metres or 10 minutes of a train or bus station – making it convenient for everyone no matter where they are!

WHEN

Of course, because not everyone in Calgary will be free on October 18th (which is the official election date), those still looking to fill out their ballots in person can do so at one of 37 designated Advance Voting stations between 8 am and 7 pm Mondays through Friday, 10 am and 7 pm on Saturday and 10 am to 3 pm Sunday, between October 4th and 10th.

WHO

Not sure who’s even running this year? You can view all 28 candidates as well as their websites here – but don’t forget! You’re not only voting for a new mayor, you’re also voting for a new ward councilor and Public/Private School Board trustees.

If you have any more questions or need clarification on any of the other voting protocols or candidates, please visit the City of Calgary Election website here.

Happy voting, friends!
