Here’s what to know about Alberta’s tightened restrictions

Despite the best efforts of many staying home and following guidelines, it seems as though provincial coronavirus cases continue to rise. In fact, on April 28 alone, Alberta has recorded a record-breaking 2,048 active cases of the virus, which is insane. Because of this, the government has decided to tighten existing COVID restrictions in hotspots like Edmonton, Calgary, Fort McMurray, Red Deer, Grande Prairie, Strathcona County, Lethbridge, and Airdrie.

In addition to just seeing a daily influx, the province currently has 632 patients in the hospital, 151 of which are in intensive care. As we’re you’re already aware, this makes it pretty tough to bring regular patients in for surgeries and regularly scheduled treatments.

Luckily, these restrictions are nothing that we haven’t seen before, and will only remain in place for the next two weeks, or until the region falls under the threshold of 350 cases per 100,000 people. This means that if we ban together, stay away from others and continue to wash our hands, wear masks, etc. it won’t be any longer than that.

Effective today, April 30th, all youth and adult indoor sports, performances, and activities will be prohibited. Indoor recreational facilities must close their doors and all fitness activities, including group physical activities (team sports, classes and training sessions) one-on-one lessons and all other practices training and games will also be prohibited as of today.

Lastly, effective, Monday, May 3rd, though K-6 students will continue in-classroom learning, those in grades 7 to 12 must shift back to online classes.

Believe us when we say that we’re tired of all of this too, but it’s important to remember that we could be saving lives. This remains just as important as it was a year ago and will stay as such until we eradicate this thing. Vaccines are on their way for everyone, Alberta – so just hold on a little while longer.

Please, stay safe, be smart and be kind. We’ll get through this!
