Here’s what kind of homes $1 million can get you all around BC

We don’t know about you, but we’ve been getting a little bit of cabin fever, and daydreaming about what $1M can buy us across BC sounds like a good mental break. Weirdly, one of the biggest lessons we learned last year was that most people only need a good internet connection to do their jobs. What’s more, while we don’t think that working from home will be standard forever, there’s no denying that office culture has seriously shifted.

So, that gives us all the more reason to check out what $1M can buy you around BC these days. While we’re still a long way out from signing a mortgage ourselves, it’s just nice to know what’s out there!

Ucluelet- $898,000

Ucluelet and nearby Tofino are sort of the gold standard when it comes to Vancouver Island living, so we think it’s reasonable to start there. Enough of a destination to support amazing restaurants and amenities, but remote enough that the population stays quite low. Here, $898k gets you a recently-built 1,730 sq. ft. house with 3 beds and 2 baths, plus a faint view of the ocean nearby.

Gibsons- $895,000

As the starting point of the Sunshine Coast, Gibsons has seen a transition from a primarily industrial town to a more complex economy with a focus on small businesses. There’s a sizeable retiree population (the median age is around 55), but we doubt people moving here are too worried about which nightclubs to hit. This 4 bed, 2 bath home has maybe one of the most West Coast features we’ve seen- a bathtub on the balcony.

North Vancouver- $825,000

If you’re looking for privacy and proximity to city life, then a floating home might just be the solution. Literally blocks away from the Lonsdale Quay, the home features 2-storeys and all the amenities you’ll need. While it’s not for everyone, this is about as good as it gets for living on the water anywhere near Vancouver without dropping millions to do so. That’s something, right?

Lake Country- $825,000

Located between Vernon and Kelowna, Lake Country is a little slice of Okanagan heaven. And, what better way to celebrate it than by painting your house a shocking shade of pink? While there’s some work to be done with landscaping (and repainting), we think this 3 bed, 2 bath home has some solid bones. Plus, a private pool overlooking the lake is a pretty great bonus.

Tappen- $929,000

Of course, picking a spot a little north gets you on the water, instead of just looking at it. This small town outside of Salmon Arm features amazing views of Shuswap Lake, plus is close that you can still hit up the farmers market on weekends. This 3-storey home features 2 beds and 2 baths, 100 feet of lake frontage, and a pretty serious amount of privacy. In the summer months, it’s hard to beat!

Kimberley- $840,000

Whistler might be the most impressive ski resort in the province, but it has nothing on the combined strength of the Canadian Rockies (yeah, we said it). We think that Kimberley is a great home base; it’s got its own resort, is within a day trip to Fernie, and can easily reach Kicking Horse and Whitewater for weekend adventures. Plus, this amazing home has been completed updated since it was formerly a lodge for travellers. And don’t get us started on golf in the summer! Honestly, this one is a gem.

Smithers- $855,00

You didn’t think we’d write a list like this and not include something for the true naturalists among us, did you? Say hello to this incredible, 449-acre parcel split between cleared pastures and forested areas. For reference, it was in and around Smithers that our favourite man vs. nature movie, The Grey, was made. Pair that was a Dick Proenneke-esque log cabin on the property, and you’ve got a full-on, unforgiving, paradise here.

Alright folks, that’s our roundup of what $1 million can get you all around BC! Now the question is, which area are you going to keep in mind?
