Ontario’s panoramic ‘Heaven’s Gate’ trail is home to very rare animals

This breathtaking trail definitely lives up to its name! Heaven’s Gate in Ontario is so beautiful that it has inspired the famous paintings of the Group of Seven.

The trail’s real Anishinaabe name is Kitchitwaa Shkwaandem, and Heaven’s Gate is a rough translation, according to the Escarpment Biosphere Conservancy.

“With over 1,900 acres of wild beauty to explore on our trails, Heaven’s Gate is sure to be one of the most memorable hikes you’ll ever have,” says the conservancy.

In fact, Northeastern Ontario’s tourism website says it’s “one of Ontario’s best-kept secrets.”

It’s located between Sudbury and Manitoulin Island and is meant to protect this culturally and ecologically significant land from development.

It also bridges the gap between LaCloche Provincial Reserve and Killarney Provincial Park.

This special place is the result of an acquisition by community donations, as well as the federal government’s Natural Heritage Conservation Program, Canada’s Nature Fund, and the Ontario Land Trust Alliance.

The investment was well worth it because this beautiful stretch of land is said to be “extremely biodiverse.”

There are over 12 species at risk who call it home, as well as three lakes and two mountains within its borders along the ancient Canadian Shield.

As you make your way along the trails, you’ll likely see some of the “rarest and most beautiful flora and fauna” that inhabit the area.

That includes Bald and Golden Eagles, River Otters, Blanding’s Turtles, and the elusive and majestic Algonquin Wolves if you’re lucky.

The trails of Heaven’s Gate can be accessed from multiple points along Highway 6 and on Bay of Islands Drive.

While you’re in the area, you can pay a visit to the incredibly scenic Manitoulin Island, which is home to a cascading waterfall with a natural pool below it that you can swim in.

So if you’re looking for the ultimate ending to your summer adventures this year, a trip to Heaven’s Gate is well worth it.
