This popular Ontario destination is known as ‘Hamptons of the North’ & here’s why

If Toronto is Canada’s New York City, it should come as no surprise that the “Hamptons of the North” is not too far away.

A new article by Travel + Leisure refers to the Ontario cottage country region of Muskoka as the “Hamptons of the North,” the idyllic escape that the rich and famous flock to in the warmer months.

The article describes the Muskoka region as the “summer playground for Toronto’s elite,” with rows and rows of cottages that are more like mansions on the water, as well as golf courses and luxe resorts.

The Hamptons has a similar reputation as a summer destination for New York City’s most affluent residents. Its seaside villages are populated with massive estates, high-end restaurants, designer boutiques, and private clubs.

Like The Hamptons, Muskoka boasts an impressive roster of summer residents. Many of them reside on the northern tip of Lake Joseph, also known as “Billionaires Row.”

According to a recent article by Forbes, some of the most famous visitors over the years include Justin Bieber, Kurt Russell, Goldie Hawn, Kate Hudson, and Martin Short.

Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg also own cottages in Muskoka, the article says.

This past summer, David and Victoria Beckham enjoyed a family vacation in the Muskoka region.

Mark Wahlberg, Rande Gerber, and NHL legend Tie Domi were also in attendance, according to photos shared by Beckham.

Those who want a taste of the good life in Muskoka don’t need a billionaire’s budget to do so.

There are plenty of properties you can rent in the region on Airbnb, but you may want to reserve your spot well ahead of time as you can imagine that the demand for these homes is quite high.

Beer enthusiasts can also spend a weekend at Muskoka’s recently-opened beer spa.

The Hamptons of the North isn’t entirely inaccessible for us regular folks. Unless celebrities continue to buy up the real estate, that is.
