Canada’s second oldest lighthouse is the most haunted place along Toronto’s waterfront

Here’s a great way to get into the Halloween spirit! Canada’s second oldest lighthouse is in Toronto – the Gibraltar Point Lighthouse. Not only is it still standing today, but it’s also considered the most haunted place along Toronto’s waterfront.

The history

Firstly, let’s break down the history behind the lighthouse and why it’s known for being haunted.

“While the lighthouse was a major landmark in Toronto during the 1800s and 1900s, the lighthouse had a dark reputation,” shares the Waterfront BIA.

The lighthouse was used as a guide for ships in the 1800s but while its purpose was for good, the light confused some sailors causing wrecks.

Toronto Public Library dives deeper into what makes the spot so haunted, and it starts with the lighthouse keeper at the time. It shares, “The lighthouse keeper (John Radelmüller) saw his guests were becoming too drunk at one point and he refused to produce more liquor.”

“The enraged soldiers beat Radelmüller to death and escape along Blockhouse Bay. His body was allegedly cut into pieces and buried around the islands.”

Radelmüller is said to be the being that haunts the site.

People have reported seeing the lighthouse light flashing bright while others have seen what looks like an old man roaming around.

Getting there

The lighthouse stands on Toronto Island and if you’re thinking about visiting you’ll need to take a ferry from the Mainland Ferry Docks in Toronto to Centre Island.

Once at Centre Island, “Follow Avenue Of the Islands” south to Lakeshore Road. From there it’s about a 2 km walk from the ferry station to the lighthouse.
