10 free and cheap things to do in Edmonton this February

New month, new events in the city! And while we like heading out to events in and around Edmonton, sometimes they can be costly and things can add up quick. Fear not, there are things to do in Edmonton that are free or cheap. And here they are!

FLYING CANOE VOLANT

Celebrating on Treat 6 land, Flying Canoë Volant is a free, family-friendly and magical winter event that spans over several days at the start of February. Events take place indoors and outdoors, and is all about a long winter’s night.

When: February 1st to 4th, 2023
Where:  Mill Creek Ravine

LA POUTINE WEEK

Canada’s largest poutine festival, La Poutine Week is back! Poutine lovers will have the chance to indulge in new and exciting creations, and one-of-a-kind flavours all while supporting local restaurants. Participating restaurants will be revealed on January 28.

When: February 1st to 14th, 2023
Where: Various Edmonton restaurants
Cost: Varies

SWEET TREATS & LATTE FESTIVAL

What is better than treats & lattes during the cold winter months? Good news! The Sweet Treats & Latte Festival is back for a third year, with even more delicious desserts and drinks to enjoy.

When: February 4th to 20th, 2023
Where: Various, to be announced
Cost: Free to enter

YEG SNOW & ICE FEST

Edmonton’s first winter recreation festival centered around an urban ice climbing wall is returning! The event is hosted by the Alpine Club of Canada Edmonton section with the Edmonton Ski Club and Factory Climbing. There will be a number of local businesses to bring a variety of activities to enjoy.

When: Saturday, February 11th, 2023

GO SKATING

The ice rinks are calling, and we must go! From small and lesser-known spots to some of the most popular skating areas around, Edmonton is full of incredible options, and we’re going to make the most of them every chance we get!

ART GALLERY OF ALBERTA

The AGA has pulled out all the stops for the winter, and if you’re looking to spend a few hours staring at pretty art, it doesn’t get much better than this.

WINTER CITY WEEKENDS 

Winter City Weekends is hosted by EAC at Churchill Square! It has family friendly programming every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, where you can get on the ice and groove to some of Edmonton’s best musicians and DJs. And they also offer free skates!

When: Weekends until February 26th, 2023

EDMONTON SKI CLUB

The Edmonton Ski Club is home to the Ice Wall, and offers classic skiing options plus a snow tube park, making it one of the most versatile local attractions in the city.

When: Open throughout February

TASTE OF AFRICA

To celebrate Black History Month, Taste of Africa returns with a rich display of African Dance, Story Telling, Poetry, Arm chair travels, and lots more. The evening ends with a tasting of a variety of foods from different parts of Africa and the Carribean.

When: Saturday, February 25th, 2023

ANNUAL WINTER FAMILY FUN DAY

The Winter Family Fun Day will be offering a free variety of indoor and outdoor activities for the whole family. Expect snow painting, snowshoeing, snow fort building, hot chocolate, snacks and so much more!
