Summer is officially winding down, and, while it feels so far away, fall is just around the corner. And if you’re looking to save, there are plenty of things that you can check out for free or $25 and under this upcoming month. Not sure what’s happening? Here are some of the best free and cheap things to do in Edmonton this September.

Alberta Day

It’s almost Alberta Day. This year, you can check out free family-friendly fun, live music, food vendors and an exciting drone show at the end of the night. Musical performances include Scenic Route to Alaska!

India Film Festival of Alberta

The opening night of the 10th annual India Film Festival of Alberta promises to be a star-studded affair, as per organizers. You can expect “a red carpet hosting an array of dignitaries, celebrities, and luminaries such as Shabana Azmi, Saiyami Kher, R. Balki, Gauri Shinde, Gautham Vasudev Menon, R. D. Rajasekhar, Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, and Vikranth Massey.”

Cocktails and Jerk Festival 

Check out the Cocktails and Jerk Festival the second weekend of September! Cocktails and Jerk is “an annual celebration of Caribbean culture, flavours, and rhythms, emphasizing Jamaican heritage.” You can enjoy live music, delicious jerk dishes, tropical cocktails, and vibrant community spirit!

When: Friday, September 6th and Saturday, September 7th

The Strathearn Art Walk & Music Festival

Get your art on, Edmonton! The Strathearn Art Walk is a free, family-friendly event that celebrates art in our community. Enjoy the work of emerging and professional artists, all with the scenic backdrop of our beautiful river valley and city skyline!

Immersive Cinema Experience

The Immersive Cinema Experience returns in September with The Garfield movie. The event is free to attend, and popcorn, snacks, and beverages will be available for purchase!

Afro x Latin Arts Carnival

Get ready to dance at this event! Afro x Latin Arts Carnival is a vibrant celebration of Afro and Latin cultures with live music, food, dance battles, workshops, an artisan market, and family fun. Be sure to RSVP online.

Savour Strathcona

The annual celebration of local food and art returns on September 8th.  According to organizers, “get ready for a whirlwind of flavours and creativity at Savour Strathcona, the ultimate festival of local cuisine, artistry, and music!”

Kaleido Family Arts Festival

From September 13th to 15th, Arts on the Ave and Kaleido are presenting Kaleido Family Arts Festival 2024! The theme for this year is Hearts a Meltin. “Celebrate the arts and discover music, theatre, dance, street performances, food, artisans, art galleries, markets, and more in alleys, rooftops, parks and on Alberta Avenue.”

The 7th Annual Edmonton Filipino Fiesta

Kinsmen Beer, Wine & Spirits Festival

On the higher end of our cheap things to do this month is the Kinsmen Beer, Wine & Spirits Festival! The Kinsmen Club of Edmonton Clubhouse Field will host the fun day of drinks, and entertainment, where you can sample a variety of beverages from local breweries, wineries, and distilleries.

Books2Buy used book sale

Check out the big Books2Buy used book sale in Edmonton to save a ton of money on pre-loved novels, movies, and children’s stories. According to their website, paperpacks, CDs and Audiobooks will start at just $1, while hardcover books and DVDs can be purchased for $2.

Friday Nights at the Grand Night Market

The Friday Nights at the Grand Night Market continues in September. Geared toward an evening date night/weekend crowd, visitors can see live performances, DJs, a licensed beverage garden, and fun for all ages! There will be local artisan vendors, food trucks, concession/street eats, vintage and more!

Truth and Reconciliation Event

On September 30th, you are invited to experience a day of community, reflection, dialogue, and hope at the Truth and Reconciliation Event at Métis Crossing. “There will be an opening ceremony featuring prayers and stories of resilience, followed by engaging conversations with Métis Knowledge Holders. Enjoy traditional live music and dance that celebrates the enduring spirit of the Métis community,” according to organizers.

Edmonton Corn Maze
