Some Vancouver residents will save money on their gas bills soon & here’s what to know

Great news, Vancouver! FortisBC recently got the green light from the BC Utilities Commission to decrease the cost of gas rate, and customers can soon start saving on their gas bills.

According to the news release, “residential customers with an average annual natural gas consumption of 90 gigajoules (GJ) per year, will see an approximate annual bill decrease of 7.73 percent, or $90.”

In terms of the new approved rate, the BCUC was able to lower the price per GJ from $4.159 to $3.159 per GJ for all residential customers in the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, and Fort Nelson service areas. This change will go into effect on July 1st.

While $1 less per GJ might not seem like a lot, it can go a long way when it comes to reducing monthly expenses. Since savings are few and far in between in Vancouver, we’ll take what we can get!

The BCUC is an independent body responsible for regulating BC’s energy utilities, as well as its compulsory automobile insurance rates and pipeline rates.

Ultimately, its role is to balance the interests of customers with the interests of the businesses it regulates, according to the release.
