This small Alberta town has been featured in over 10 movies

Alberta has no shortage of small towns packed with charm and character, but few are as prolific in the movie scene as Fort Macleod.

Located south of Calgary, the small town of Fort Macleod was officially incorporated back in 1892. Of course, its history goes way back.

“This area has always been inhabited by the Blackfoot people,” says the Town’s website. “They lived a nomadic lifestyle, following the food sources (buffalo) for the most part.”

Today, Fort Macleod is a popular spot to visit, thanks to its picturesque backdrop and historic Main Street. The street is heavily photographed thanks to its beautiful brick and sandstone buildings and is one of two provincial historic areas designated by the Province.

But it’s not just for locals and tourists to enjoy — filmmakers have also taken notice. In fact, according to the Town’s website, a total of 19 movies have been filmed in and around Fort Macleod.

Notable blockbuster titles include Brokeback Mountain, Interstellar, and Let Him Go. Fort Macleod was also prominently in Ghostbusters: Afterlife, as well as The Last of Us.

Other notable projects include PasschendaeleIn Cold Blood, and an episode of Fargo

Make it a day trip! Enjoy a stroll through the historic downtown and visit iconic businesses like the Empress Theatre. If you venture a little further, you can take in the Oldman River Valley Wilderness Park, a popular place for fishing, floating, and kayaking.

If you’re stopping by as part of a longer road trip, make sure to visit the iconic Alberta landmarks of Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, Waterton, Writing-on-Stone National Park, and Lundbreck Falls.

Make time for a day trip to Fort Macleod this summer. You never know what’s filming nearby, and you might even spot someone famous.
