When the sun is high and the days are longer, there’s no place quite like Fish Creek Park in Calgary.
Whether you’re in need of an outdoor adventure, a riverside hang, or a sweet treat under a shady tree, this enchanting escape is an urban playground.
Spanning 19 kilometres from east to west, Calgary’s Fish Creek is one of North America’s largest urban parks, but its size isn’t the only thing worth mentioning.
With biking and hiking trails totalling over 80 kilometres, there’s much to see and plenty to do, especially when temperatures rise.
Here, you can bird watch, walk through fields of grass and wildflowers, see wildlife, and even hit the beach.
Sikome Lake, also located within the area, is a man-made spot where you can go for a swim and feel soft sand between your toes.
While it can get pretty busy in the summertime, this Calgary watering hole is truly one of a kind and makes for an eventful morning or afternoon.

Hidden in the trees, this charming eatery serves ice cream, mac and cheese, hot dogs, paninis, and coffee.
History buffs will know that Fish Creek is also where people have gathered for thousands of years.
According to Alberta Parks, a glacier once covered the area, but in 6500 B.C., humans had arrived in the valley.
Since then, people from all walks of life have come and gone, building, hunting, and planting their way into more modern times.
It wasn’t actually until 1975 that the area was given provincial park status.
Today, it remains a natural beauty where visitors can get a tan, explore, and enjoy a frosty treat.
