This mountain town in BC is ringing in the New Year with sleigh rides & fireworks

Ready for your next mountain adventure? Situated in the picturesque Elk Valley is the historic town of Fernie, a charming mountain town with tons of festivities to check out this time of year.

In the summer, Maiden Lake is a popular spot for paddling and picnicking, and come wintertime, it transforms into a popular spot for pond skating.

According to Tourism Fernie, the lake freezes over by early December every year, so it’s worth checking out sometime this month if you’re planning a road trip!

Visitors can stroll down a preserved historic downtown on 2nd Avenue, consisting of a Heritage Library, a Court House (1911), City Hall (1905), and the Arts Station, a culture and arts hub that was once a railway station for the CP Rail Line, according to Tourism Fernie.

Holiday events 2023

In addition to beloved annual events like Fernie’s ‘Great Pumpkin Hunt’ and Griz Days Winter Festival, the town has tons of holiday cheer this time of year. This month, visitors can go snowmobiling on Coal Creek, ride in horse-drawn sleighs at the Fernie Alpine Resort (available daily from December 22nd to January 5th), indulge in a pancake breakfast with Santa, and take part in a number of community Christmas parties, craft fairs, and holiday concerts.

As well, there’s a special celebration slated for New Year’s Eve this year at the Fernie Alpine Resort. On Sunday, December 31st, there will be holiday sleigh rides from 1 pm to 7 pm and night skiing on the Mighty Moose from 4 to 9 pm, followed by fireworks.

From 7 to 9 pm, there will also be free crafts and games for families to enjoy at the Slopeside Cafe.

So there you have it, BC! If you’re looking for a last-minute road trip that the whole family will enjoy, it’s a great time to add Fernie to your map this season.
