Western Canada’s only freshwater dive park is in B.C.

Now officially open for the season, Ellison Provincial Park is a treasure trove of natural wonders, scenic headlands, and sunken artifacts. Visitors can roam the park’s 220 hectares of forested benchlands above a rocky shoreline and scenic coves, all situated on the northeastern shore of Okanagan Lake. But this is not your typical lake day destination.

Combined with the dry, sunny Okanagan climate, visitors can hike through six kilometres of trails, some with steep sections with rewarding views. As such, hiking along the scenic headlands requires extra care and attention, according to BC Parks.

These steeper trails offer hikers panoramic vistas of Okanagan Lake, Spallumcheen, Fintry, Terrace Mountain, and the communities of Westside Road.

“Sunken artifacts”

As Western Canada’s only freshwater dive park, Ellison Park’s main draw lies beneath the water’s surface.

According to BC Parks, warm waters beckon swimmers in at three main beaches, each with designated swimming areas. Below the surface, the dive park is home to “sunken artifacts” that add to the fascinating plant and animal life you’ll find.

Note that there are no active lifeguards on duty, so swim with caution.

Rock climbing opportunities

Finally, those looking to try their hand at rock climbing can find small granite cliffs by South Bay that are perfect for beginners. For more skilled climbers and boulderers, there are top-rope climbing opportunities as well as guided rock-climbing camps in the park.

Want to stay overnight? Campers have over 60 reservable front-country campsites to choose from.

The park gate is now open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily until October 13, 2025.

So there you have it, Vancouver! Adventures of all kinds await here.
