Alberta has an urban green space 22 times the size of Central Park in New York City

For those who love the outdoors, there’s no place quite like Wildrose Country. From towering trees to majestic wildlife, we’re spoiled for choice, but few year-round destinations are as large or in charge as the North Saskatchewan River Valley in Edmonton.

The Ribbon of Green

With over 160 kilometres of maintained pathways and lush park space, this magical place is widely considered the largest urban park in all of Canada, 22 times the size of New York’s sprawling Central Park.

Often referred to as the city’s “ribbon of green,” 20 major parks make up its incredible size.

On the north bank of the river, explore the off-leash oasis in Buena Vista Park, or launch a boat in Capilano. From scenic trails to picnic areas, there is a little something for everyone.

In the wintertime, fat bike or cross-country ski, then when the sun finds its way through dark clouds, go canoeing, gold-panning, or jet skiing — the ribbon is all encompassing and forever changing.

Are you an adrenaline seeker? There are also areas where you can ride off-road on a mountain bike, but please stay safe.

To get there, take one of the many entry points across the city, one of the most exciting being the 100 Street Funicular, a glass-walled elevator with an incredible view and free admission.

Around the River Valley

In addition to fresh air and flora, several popular attractions surround the river valley.

If you stray from the woodland, Edmonton Valley Zoo, the Muttart Conservatory, and Fort Edmonton Park are nearby and are almost always hosting events or have special programming.

With so much to see, no two trips will be quite the same, so lace up, wear sunscreen, and go adventuring.

The valley is wide, and the bragging rights are yours, Edmonton.
